How much of our memory can we trust? In Black Box, our protagonist Nolan is first seen in the trailer with memory troubles, having forgetful patterns due to the traumatic car crash he was involved in. Throughout his treatment, we learn that there may be more history to his memory problems than what originally meets the eye. The trailer goes on to show many of the struggles he endures throughout his time, and how it affects his family and friends.

Significance:

In the film Black Box by director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffor, the audience is presented with many subjects involving psychology and mental health. The title itself is a reference to a black box, which is a machine where one can see the input and output, but not the process that creates it. This was purposefully done to try and get viewers to look more towards the process, and not just the outcome of an event. Osei-Kuffor attempts to appeal to black audiences, and encourages them to become more aware of their mental status, and work through them. This film also touches on the subject of family, creating a friendly neighborhood and environment that ultimately wants to see everyone succeed.

Discussion Questions: How do you think the film would play out if the personality of the protagonist was different?

The film repeats the message of mental health in black communities. Why did the director exaggerate the significance of mental health in the film, and how could this push be applied to modern day?

Why did the director present the two different parent situations? What message do you believe the director intended to be interpreted?
